Southland Rural Heritage Trust

Background

Southland Rural Heritage Trust was established in 2002 with the initial intention of re-creating an experience of family farm life between 1925-35 with the emphasis on horse-power and heirloom breeds. The Trust comprises a mix of elected and appointed trustees representing Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council and Environment Southland.

In May 2003, the Trust decided that the original concept of Donovan Farm, Southlands Rural Heritage Centre as a stand-alone visitor attraction, was not viable.

A strategic plan has been developed in response to that decision. It remains true to the Southland Rural Heritage Trust?s original vision but follows new pathways to meet its objectives. Input to the plan has been provided through public meetings and consultation with stakeholders and other heritage groups.
